LIFE DRAWING - No instructor
Allied Arts Life Drawing Workshop is a great way to spend the morning honing your drawing skills.
Only $12 for three hours with a live model; bring your medium of choice. Walk-ins welcome.
The new schedule of meeting is 1st and 3rd Monday of every month - Cambria Center for the Arts building, "mauve room". When you enter from the rear parking lot, walk straight through the doors, and there you are.

Post Date: 12/10/2012 - Announcement for Coast Union High School library
The Coast Union High School library is looking for books about art, crafts and famous artists, especially biographies (and extra especially biographies about women artists). Impressionism, Dada, Sculptures, German Expressionism, Pop, Cubism, Abstract and Renaissance, it's all welcome. I am trying to avoid the hugely over-sized, extremely outdated and black & white books.
If you know of anyone who may like to make a donation please contact me at 924-2800 or sjackson@coastusd.org, or drop them off at the high school. Your books will be put to good use and are greatly appreciated.

Shouldn't Allied Arts have a display of what we offer to the community? What better place to show off than the annual Cambria parade? Anyone interested in helping create a float to represent Cambria Center for the Arts in next years' Pinedorado parade? Are you able to lend a truck or trailer for that day? Join me in my (so far) committee of one and see if we can dream up something spectacular for 2013.

Posted: 05/15/2013: - For the first time ever, Small Favors VIII, a well-known show in Philadelphia opened its doors to newcomers via a call-for-entries application.  In previous years, the show was by invitation-only and featured lots of big names in contemporary ceramics.  I applied and sent photos of two pieces, "Jumping" - Covered Jar from Woodcut Series and "Buzzing" - Covered Jar from Woodcut Series for consideration.
The show recently opened and one of my pieces has already sold! The exhibit has an online sales gallery, and "Buzzing" is still available!  Check out work from so many great artists online at Small Favors VIII.

Post Date: 5/14/2013 - The Painted Lily, at 2026 Main Street in Cambria next to Lily's Coffee House, is having a reception for Allied Arts Member Lynn Rathbun from 1-5 on May 25th. Refreshments will be served.
I have been one of the artists showing (and working) at the Painted Lily since March, and will have quite a few new pieces.

The "9th ANNUAL ART ECO IN THE GARDEN" exhibit honored Larry Le Brane's sculpture "Tower of Dazzle" with an award during their Opening Artist Reception in March. This fascinating show features 60+ pieces of art using reclaimed, recycled & natural materials throughout the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden & sponsored by FrameWorks.

Posted: 03/26/2013: - I have the honor of showing at the Community Center in Pacifica on Crespi and Coast Highway with a ceramist who is showing for the first time, Mary Leupold. We have twenty works we are featuring in the lobby between May first and May 31st. Drop by and see "Off the Wall."
Posted: 03/26/2013: - Also I will be featuring 15 large photography prints in the artists' store at the Sanchez Art Center from May 31st to July 31st. They are all priced accessibly at $35. They are matted on a backing board. I will also offer my original photography cards at $3.00 each. All these items are tax included. Drop by the Sanchez Art Center at 1220 Linda Mar Blvd. in Pacifica during that time.

He plans to be up our way again soon to take people out on a plein-air outing, probably Sat morning, the
first weekend of Oct. He would like Cambria artists to join him.

    Update Date: 04/05/2013: I've just recently managed to get published a book that I've written entitled "Doug's Watercolor Painting Book"; It describes how to execute a transparent watercolor painting plus a number of other topics that are important for artists to know about in order to succeed.     My book has a number of examples of my artwork but also a lot of useful information that I'm sure you'll appreciate.

Vet's office in Tin City: Animal related art in the waiting room.
Post Date: 5/11/2013: The vet's office in Tin City, Cambria is doing a remodel and would like to display animal related art in the waiting room. This sounds like another good exhibit area for Allied Artists. Along with the artwork, artists will need to provide a card with price and information. Your contact is Amy Ruiz, who will give you all the details.

KCBX: 2013 Live Oak Music Festival Seeks Artwork Submissions:
- KCBX Public Radio is now accepting artist submissions for the 2013 Live Oak Music Festival official artwork.
- This will be our 25th annual event, held in June 2013 at the Live Oak Camp in Santa Barbara County.
- While this festival is 99% volunteer run, there is a small commission for this job, plus free tickets to the event for the selected artist and his or her guests.
- Artist submissions will be accepted through Friday, August 24th, 2012.

Allied Arts member, Bill Barnhill, has been accepted into the Art Eco show at the SLO Botanical Gardens. It's a really cool show displayed throughout the gardens and features artwork of recycled and natural materials. Bill is showing "The Long Ride on the Edge of Forever" and "The Laughing Phoenix of Rigel 7".		   
 
Call for Artists: Display Paintings in Wine Tasting Room in Paso Robles
02/09/2013: Local artist, Penny Fitzgerald, is helping a client put together some paintings to be displayed in her wine tasting room in Paso Robles. There will be a reception and the paintings will be up for sale for about 2 months and then will switch out and do another reception.
Penny would like to get the paintings hung next week. She will take them to Paso and bring them back if they do not sell.
Penny needs about 8-10 additional pieces. Interested artists can email with a image of what they would like to show.

Call for Entries: 2013 Open Studios Art Tour
Open Studios Weekends: October 12-13 and October 19-20. Both Weekends Are Countywide.
Since, this is the 15th year, we are expecting additional promotions and attention for the Open Studio Art Tour. This is the only visual art event in San Luis Obispo County where artists can exhibit commission-free for 14-28 hours for only $150. 5,000 catalogs are printed and over 6,000 are viewed online. Additionally, the printed catalog is kept by visitors for years, giving artists added, immeasurable exposure.
Deadline for entries (Fee $150) is April 19th and applications are available online -click here. $200 for April 20 -30.

Call for Artists: 2013 Paso Robles Festival of the Arts: "Wild & Precious" Exhibition May 23 - June 30
Artists are invited to submit work for "Wild & Precious", the signature exhibition of the 2013 Paso Robles Festival of the Arts. Held inside Studios on the Park in the heart of downtown Paso Robles, the special month long exhibition showcases original artworks inspired by the Mary Oliver poem "The Summer Day."
Creative interpretation of the theme "Wild & Precious" is encouraged. From traditional to contemporary, the possibilities are wide open! Experienced juror Elizabeth Tolley will be looking for personal vision and creative approach as well as excellence in execution. She welcomes submissions in all styles and media.
Elizabeth Tolley and co-judge William Hosner will award $1500 in cash prizes.

Guidelines:
  • Original works in any medium. All works must be for sale
  • Up to 70 works will be selected depending on the size
  • $15 for 1 entry, $25 for 2 entries, $10 for each additional entry No entry limit but entry fees are nonrefundable
  • $1,500 in cash prizes to be awarded, including a $500 Editha Spencer Memorial Award!!!
  • 40% commission on all sales benefiting future Festivals, the Salinas River Corridor Project, and Studios on the Park (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit open studios art center)
  • All works must be delivered ready-to-view (not wrapped or packaged)
  • 2D works must be ready-to-hang (professionally framed/wired)
  • Gallery wrapped canvas pieces are acceptable
  • 2D can be NO LARGER than 108" height and width
  • 3D work works must be able to be lifted easily - artists must be available for placement of works over 15 lb
  • Jewelry must be submitted ready-to-display
   
 
Call for Artists: Morro Bay Art Center Juried Show
Art Center Morro Bay is hosting a San Luis Obispo County juried show, "Palette Talent", August 8 to September 30, 2013. Cash awards and ribbons to be awarded.
Carry in date is Tuesday August 6th, 10am-2pm, with pick up for juried work on the same day between 5pm-6pm.
Those chosen for exhibit will remain. Entries must be original oil, pastel, acrylic or watercolor; with a limit of no more than 36" on a side including frame, and a maximum of 2 entries per artist. $35.00 non members/$25.00 members.
